Proofreading

Proofreading is the task of comparing a translation with the original text and ensuring there are no spelling mistakes, grammatical errors, misunderstandings, omissions or ambiguities. We can do this for over 300 languages, including English.

It’s an essential step in the process of making your document perfect, polished and ready to be published.

Do I really need it?

If you have a translation destined for internal use only, you may decide that an editing and proofreading stage is not essential. However, we strongly recommend proofreading for all material destined for publication. Avoiding mistakes in any language helps with understanding and building trust.

You must have seen social media posts where people take a mocking snap of signs and packaging with embarrassing typos and mistakes. Don’t let your business get this kind of fame!

Proofreading ensures your customers focus on your message, not your spelling.

We also offer ISO-certified translations. If you need this then it’s a requirement that editing and proofreading are included in the service.

Who does the proofreading?

Our proofreading is completed by independent native speakers who are specialists in particular subject areas. Upon completion of the proofreading stage, we discuss any comments made by the freelance proofreader with the original translator. After the comments have been addressed, we incorporate amendments as necessary.

“We’ve worked with the Atlas team across some very specialised industry translations in multiple languages – everyone’s responsive, helpful and clear in their communications. So easy to work with.”

Frequently asked questions

Proofreading services are usually charged per 1000 words, according to the language and subject matter involved. Assuming the text has been written or translated by a suitably qualified professional, we recommend that you allow at least one hour of proofreading per 1000 words of text.

However, if the text is longer, the freelance proofreader will become familiar with the topic as work progresses, thereby being able to work faster.
